What is HR software?
HR software is any application built to manage employee-related tasks - records, leave, payroll, recruiting, or performance - ranging from a single-purpose tool to a full HCM suite.
The category is broad enough to be almost meaningless on its own, which is why the more specific terms matter: an HRIS or core HR system covers records and leave, an ATS covers recruiting, and an HCM suite bundles most of it together for large companies. "HR software" is the umbrella; the acronym underneath tells you what it actually does.
For an SMB choosing a tool, the useful question is not whether something is HR software, but which slice of HR it covers, and whether that slice matches what the team needs today rather than a full suite bought for features that will not get used.
