ATS vs HRIS

What is ATS vs HRIS?

An ATS (applicant tracking system) manages hiring - job posts, applications, and interview stages - while an HRIS manages the people you already employ - records, leave, and compensation; they solve different problems and are often separate tools.

The confusion is common because both sit under 'HR software'. The simple split: an ATS works with candidates, an HRIS works with employees. Someone becomes an HRIS record roughly when they sign the contract, not while they are still in your hiring pipeline.

A team that hires constantly wants a strong ATS; a team that mostly manages existing staff wants a solid HRIS or core HR system. Some suites bundle both, but for a 5-100 person SMB the everyday need is usually the HRIS side. HREvio is core HR (the HRIS side); applicant tracking is on the roadmap, not shipped.
