What is People operations (People Ops)?

People operations (People Ops) is a modern term for the HR function, framing it around enabling employees and running smooth day-to-day processes rather than only administration and compliance.

The name signals a shift in emphasis: from paperwork and policy enforcement toward making the everyday experience work - clean onboarding, fast answers, leave that just works. In an SMB it is often one person, or the founder, wearing that hat.

The tooling follows the same idea. A People Ops setup for an SMB is usually a core HR system for records and leave plus whatever else the company already uses, not a heavy suite. The goal is less admin, not more software.
