Equal opportunities policy
What is Equal opportunities policy?
An equal opportunities policy is a company's written commitment to treat job applicants and employees fairly regardless of characteristics like age, gender, race, disability, or religion, and to make decisions on merit rather than bias.
It is both a compliance document and a practical one: most EU countries have anti-discrimination law covering hiring, pay, and treatment at work, and the policy is the company's stated commitment to meet it, usually referenced in the employee handbook and applied in recruitment and pay decisions.
Having the policy is the easy part; the harder part is the practice behind it - consistent hiring criteria, pay that does not quietly diverge by group, and a route to raise a concern. HR records that keep compensation and employment data consistent and auditable make that practice easier to check.
