What is Time off in lieu (TOIL)?

Time off in lieu (TOIL) is paid time off given to an employee for extra hours worked, instead of paying overtime.

TOIL is tracked in hours, which is where it gets messy: the balance has to add the extra hours worked and subtract the time taken back. Many HR tools track leave in days rather than hours, so if hourly TOIL is central to your team, check how a tool handles it before you commit.
